Summary: "Are we here so we'll work so late we fall asleep together?"

I've been struggling to finish things lately, and despite lovely offers from friends (I see you, needled_ink_1975 and sporkmetender) to read and edit and share ideas, I've had every something cooking on every burner and it's not been pretty. I just read the conclusion to Stars Set Alight by ithinkyourewonderful; I really liked the story and have followed it for a couple of years, and the author decided to provide some concluding notes so she could move on to other projects in good conscience. I really respect that decision and wish her all the best in her writing. Honestly, that decision inspired me to wrap up this tiny (tiny, tiny) story I've had in the works. It's nothing splashy, but I enjoyed writing it.

For the three people who might see this: have you read Needled_Ink_1975′s massive Miranda/Andy story Engrave Our Names on Tomorrow yet? It’s set in France during the German Occupation and it’s really not to be missed. I had the honor of helping to edit it, and it was a fantastic experience.

Well, I've responded to one of the prompts provided by my wonderful friends-listers. My response to [livejournal.com profile] law_nerd's "(reading) between the lines" is under the cut. Started out with the idea of Miranda eavesdropping on Andy while she talks on the phone; ended up with something kinda porny. Thanks for a great prompt!

[livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname made a generous donation to the cause, and requested a “(sexually explicit) Doubt story.” Well, it’s taken me a year and a half--about a year and five months longer than I originally anticipated--but I’ve finished the story. Many thanks, The Last Good Name, for your patience and generosity. I really hope you enjoy this story, and I’m sorry it was so ridiculously delayed.

I also owe many thanks to my wonderful editor, [livejournal.com profile] soukup. She offered incredible insights, caught embarrassing typos, and was such a valuable supporter, questioner, and helper. I’d also like to thank Nici for being an advance reader and offering support of her own.

Author's Note: In June 2009, I requested some prompts to unstick my writing. [livejournal.com profile] somniesperus said, "'Cosmopolitan.' (Can be the drink, the magazine, or the state of mind; lady's choice.)" [livejournal.com profile] baggers said, "...location: wardrobe." So, I wrote, and in July I sent [livejournal.com profile] pin_drop my draft of a story about Nigel and Miranda's friendship. She did a fantastic job editing it. Then I sat on it, for many months, distracted by other projects and frustrated by a lack of direction. Now I've finally finished. Many thanks to my prompters and especially to my editor!

I am participating in [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti, a multi-fandom auction set up for the purpose of sending financial relief to Haiti. Until noon EST on January 20, you can bid on stories, artwork, and other offerings. The highest bidder in each auction will be notified, and will be responsible for donating the amount they bid to one of these relief organizations.

You can find my auction here. I am offering a femslash fic (minimum of 1000 words. Potential fandoms: "Battlestar Galactica" [2003 TV series], The Devil Wears Prada [film], or Doubt [film]) at a starting bid of $5.

Please consider bidding--for a story of mine or for one of the near-countless other offerings! And regardless of whether or not you win, please consider donating something to help with the long, painful recovery process that Haiti currently faces. If you're interested in donating money but would prefer not to participate in the [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti auction, Partners in Health is a great place to start.

Thank you!

Author’s Note: Many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pin_drop for being an incredibly thoughtful editor. I am beyond grateful for her amazing insights and attention to detail. This piece was a long time in the making—back in June I told Telanu I was starting to write a “really happy, really feminist” story, and mentioned that I was finding it surprisingly difficult. Her response: “Miranda + Happy = Difficult. Not surprising at all!” Four months later, I’ve learned a little bit more about Miranda and Andy and joy. (Also, FYI, the story really is told chronologically backwards.)

I fretted over “Recompense Delight”* more than any other fanfic I’ve ever posted. Writing it was a giddy, stay-up-far-too-late-typing style of FUN, but still I fretted.

A lot. )

*After the fact, I kind of think “Recompense Delight” sounds funny. What I meant by the title was that love and sex and the sharing of oneself with another are delightful things, and that just as the sinners in Romans “receiv[e] in themselves that recompense of their error,” it is possible to compensate another person for lovely things, too. Unfortunately, it kind of sounds like a dessert, like Marshmallow Pineapple Delight, or something. Oh well.

Author's Note: Some months ago, I participated in a drabble-prompting meme and discovered that I am incapable of writing drabble-length fic inspired by Doubt. After responding to the prompts indirectly with a short fic, I have finally written something with the specific prompts in mind. Please note: this story (in three sections, all complete and posted under the cut) is unrelated to the short fic. [livejournal.com profile] pin_drop prompted the first section, [livejournal.com profile] somniesperus prompted the second, and [livejournal.com profile] la_fono prompted the third. So, once again, it's with pleasure that I dedicate a Doubt story to the three of you. Many thanks for the excellent prompts.

This story is about...family. And gender. And sex. Often at the same time, and in the cleverest, strangest, loveliest of ways. I recommend reading the author's warning before diving in, but I also recommend diving in at your earliest possible convenience, because this isn't a "squicky" story at all, but rather a story about how incredibly complicated it is to be a human. [livejournal.com profile] pin_drop does justice to every character's experience--even in their most private or most misunderstood of moments, I feel genuine emotion for all of them.

It's also extremely long, extremely sexy, and--even when it's sad or intense, sometimes especially when it's sad or intense--extremely fun to read. Go forth and find out for yourself!

So, the Doubt drabbles will take awhile, probably because they don't want to be drabbles at all. You can't rush a couple of potentially gay nuns, at least that's what I always say! Ahem. I have a problem.

In the meantime, I have the Devil Wears Prada drabbles requested by [livejournal.com profile] katsforever and [livejournal.com profile] baggers all ready for consumption. Hot damn! This fic is fantastic, and it's (to my knowledge) the first fic the author has posted in this fandom, so I want to do my small part to make sure it gets read by as many people as possible. I don't want to give too much away, but it's all about lies and truth and power dynamics and the power of names, and it's sexy and psychologically rich and entertaining without a single gratuitous moment. It is very sad, but not hopelessly so, and its happy moments are the opposite of hokey. Definitely one of the best things I've read in awhile. Go read it, if you haven't already!

A/N: So, imagine that the "ABCs of DWP" Challenge was a marathon. All of the participants are at the finish line, clutching their completed stories. I am coming in last place (or nearly last), and although no one is cheering anymore and everyone's probably ready to go home, back to longer stories and their interesting lives, I'm still making a big deal about the race. I cross the finish line, do a goofy "victory" dance, and collapse onto the pavement, kissing the asphalt and maybe even, like, throwing up with exhaustion. It's a little embarrassing for everyone. "CoC is such a freak," a few people whisper. "At least she finished," a kinder soul adds.

At least I finished. Whew.

Also, while this set of drabbles is not in chronological order, each piece exists in the same "universe." This isn't the case for the other drabbles I've submitted for this challenge, but these five all include the same Miranda, the same Andy, and the same everyone else.

One more thing: the last one goes shamefully over 250 words. I figured I was already so late with these that I might as well ignore another rule while I was at it. Hopefully you won't find the extra words too self-indulgent.

Pairing: Miranda/Andy
Prompt(s): My prompt from the 2008 Valentine's Exchange: "Something sweet and funny. A day in the life of Mirandy. All of the little moments in the relationship that aren't always recorded."
Summary: Sweet and funny, eh? My first ideas were about Andy's disapproving parents, Miranda's anger, and moving in together. It isn't exactly one day in the life, but I tried my best.
Disclaimer: I own nothing related to "The Devil Wears Prada."
A/N: This fic is for [livejournal.com profile] thanatopsis76! I'm a big fan of her writing, so I was excited to write this story. This fic is brought to you by at least two bouts of writer's block, one bout of stomach flu, and a very sleepy Miranda.
A/N 2: Please note: I took some liberties in terms of time frame. The story takes place about two years after the end of the movie. Because the recession of 2008 plays into this story, I imagined that the Fashion Week during which Andy leaves Miranda was October 2006, even though the movie came out that year. The action of this story takes place from November 2008-January 2009. Apparently I decided "sweet and funny" could also handle a tiny bit of recession-talk. Nothing too dire, though. I also decided to experiment with present tense in this story, though there are a lot of memories that take place in past-tense. Also, each of the three chapters starts out in Andy's POV and shifts to Miranda's after the break.

You're such a square. )
