Miranda/Andy
The Devil Wears Prada
Rated Teen
Summary: "Are we here so we'll work so late we fall asleep together?"

I've been struggling to finish things lately, and despite lovely offers from friends (I see you, needled_ink_1975 and sporkmetender) to read and edit and share ideas, I've had every something cooking on every burner and it's not been pretty. I just read the conclusion to Stars Set Alight by ithinkyourewonderful; I really liked the story and have followed it for a couple of years, and the author decided to provide some concluding notes so she could move on to other projects in good conscience. I really respect that decision and wish her all the best in her writing. Honestly, that decision inspired me to wrap up this tiny (tiny, tiny) story I've had in the works. It's nothing splashy, but I enjoyed writing it.

For the three people who might see this: have you read Needled_Ink_1975′s massive Miranda/Andy story Engrave Our Names on Tomorrow yet? It’s set in France during the German Occupation and it’s really not to be missed. I had the honor of helping to edit it, and it was a fantastic experience.

In 2009, I posted a short piece called "Land Fathoms" and always wanted to expand upon the story. Tonight I've finally posted two sequels, and you can find the completed trilogy on Archive of Our Own.

Titles: Land Fathoms, Starless, Lightyear
Fandom: The Devil Wears Prada

Well, I've responded to one of the prompts provided by my wonderful friends-listers. My response to [livejournal.com profile] law_nerd's "(reading) between the lines" is under the cut. Started out with the idea of Miranda eavesdropping on Andy while she talks on the phone; ended up with something kinda porny. Thanks for a great prompt!

Many thanks to those who offered prompts on my last entry. I've been writing after a couple of the prompts already. Life stuff is extremely busy off and on for the next few weeks, so I think I'll write as I can into April. A few weeks from now, or when I feel I've got a substantial number of mini-stories written, I'll post them all at once. That's the plan for now, at least!

Thanks again! Hope you all are well.

My writing interests/energies have changed a lot over the last year or so, and especially in the last 6 months. Still, I kinda feel like writing some drabbles or short DWP fics tonight. Anybody care to provide me with some prompts?

Short, non-committal prompts only, please. (Good: "Miranda overreacts" or "diamonds, gowns, and popsicles." Bad: "Miranda and Andy are in China because they're adopting a six-week-old baby. Andy falls ill while there and finds out she has Stage 3 cancer. Write a multi-part saga about the couple's decision to hide the illness from the adoption agency in order to continue growing their family. Angst, smut, and baby-fluff with a happy ending, please!")

I make no promises about the results . . . or even if there will be results. But I'd very much appreciate your throwing some prompts my way, if anybody's out there. Thanks! :)

Note: This one is for the Halloween comment fic-a-thon, in response to [livejournal.com profile] chilly_flame's prompt "Reese's Peanut Butter Cups." It's a weird one, though. Domestic Halloween scene followed by gratuitous sex. Or maybe it's a sex scene preceded by some gratuitous Halloween. Either way, I thought to write a little scene and then it got a bit bigger. Written and posted quickly, in the spirit of the fic-a-thon.

So, I don't normally post directly to my dreamwidth account, but I periodically import my content from LJ. I'm not as diligent as I should be, nor have I been writing much fic, but I do like having all the stories on both sites. Most recently, I imported LJ content *right* after posting a new Doubt story to Livejournal. Then, a comment from Soukup on that entry left me wondering whether or not my entries are showing up on other people's reading pages. I understand that if I import something that's old, it'll show up under the correct date and therefore might not make it onto a reading page. However, shouldn't an entry posted and imported within an hour or so of each other show up just fine?

If you wouldn't mind checking to see if a) my entries are visible and b) if my Doubt story posted on the night of Monday the 25th shows up on your reading page, I'd be much obliged.

Thanks!

Many thanks, The Last Good Name, for your patience and generosity. I really hope you enjoy this story, and I’m sorry it was so ridiculously delayed.

I also owe many thanks to my wonderful editor, [livejournal.com profile] soukup. She offered incredible insights, caught embarrassing typos, and was such a valuable supporter, questioner, and helper. I’d also like to thank Nici for being an advance reader and offering support of her own.

This story is a short, unbeta-ed piece that emerged from a failed iTunes meme I'd attempted to unblock my writing. (In short, I listened to a couple of songs over and over at the beginning of the writing of this story, then kept going from there in silence.) So, even if this isn't the "nun story," it's a story, and I enjoyed writing it.

Summary: Nigel is observant.
Author's Note: In June 2009, I requested some prompts to unstick my writing. [livejournal.com profile] somniesperus said, "'Cosmopolitan.' (Can be the drink, the magazine, or the state of mind; lady's choice.)" [livejournal.com profile] baggers said, "...location: wardrobe." So, I wrote, and in July I sent [livejournal.com profile] pin_drop my draft of a story about Nigel and Miranda's friendship. She did a fantastic job editing it. Then I sat on it, for many months, distracted by other projects and frustrated by a lack of direction. Now I've finally finished. Many thanks to my prompters and especially to my editor!

I'm long overdue for a rec post! Here are a few choice stories from the last several months. The theme: thinking and having fun all at the same time, with fanfic as the medium for said activities. Yes, it can be done.

The Ship and the Girl by [livejournal.com profile] needled_ink1975 (The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda/Andy, PG-13)
The word that springs to mind upon reading this story is "thoughtful." Thoughtful exploration of Miranda's pre-film past, thoughtful treatment of the friendship and professional life and familial experiences of two women, thoughtful narration, thoughtful diction and syntax and everything. And guess what else? It's fun.

Four Suites and One Room by [livejournal.com profile] chilly_flame (The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda/Andy, M)
Chilly_Flame is another master of the concept of thinking and having fun all at the same time. Also, this story is really, really hot. As I mentioned to the author, "porn with plot" is a favorite genre, and this story is a prime example.

Making History (One Saturday at a Time) by [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname (The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda/Andy, R)
Thelastgoodname provided this rating: "explicit sports content. Implicit sexual content." That really says it all. Again, there is lots of thinking and lots of fun. Miranda is a football fan! Andy is a Miranda fan! By the end, Miranda is an Andy fan (and very much remains a truly scary hardcore football fan), and Andy might like football just a little bit, too.

--

Beta Tested by [livejournal.com profile] somniesperus (Battlestar Galactica, Roslin/Apollo, M)
So, it kind of cracks me up that this story is called "Beta Tested," because I beta-read it. I had a lot of fun doing so, too, though the real fun is in the sort of "beta-testing" shenanigans in which the characters indulge, all in the name of fleet safety, of course. I stubbornly maintain that the love between Laura Roslin and her Captain Apollo is canon, and Telanu does a fantastic job expanding upon the sexual tension and genuine affection present between the two characters.

--

In other news, the nuns remain stubborn, and progress remains slow, but I am not abandoning this Doubt story. The nuns are maddening and fun, and--in sticking with the theme here--I'm thinking about them a whole lot. I just need to spend more time thinking with a pen in my hand. Other things that remain stubborn: my poetry, my future, and my cats.

--

Edited to add: I love these rec'd stories with all my heart, and there have been some other good ones, too. I don't mean to sound too bitter(ly sarcastic) over the thinking and the having of fun: I just want to particularly applaud the efforts made at doing both. Sometimes, fandoms lose sight of that balance, and the fact that these fics don't have that problem is truly something to celebrate.

A Young Outsider, On the Doorstep (by Ruth La Ferla for The New York Times)

This designer is 21 years old, creates and produces his designs from his bedroom at his grandparents' house, and is putting on his first show on February 15--not at Bryant Park, but on the Upper East Side at the Society of Illustrators HQ. Personally, I can't wait to see the pictures.

After [high-school] graduation, he applied to fashion school, only to be turned away in quick succession by the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons the New School for Design.

“I was just so angry,” he said. At F.I.T., the admissions committee “just looked at my sketches and asked, ‘Who was my girl?’ ” Meaning, he said, “who did I see as my customer — was she black or was she white? They didn’t understand that those sketches are not about who is black or white. They’re about fashion. That’s all.”
(La Ferla)

At 21, this guy understands something that many people never figure out, I think. I don't think "colorblind" is a productive or realistic way to approach race: erasing difference doesn't erase privilege, (in)equality, or experience. But this isn't about being colorblind--it's about transcendence, and I'm excited to see where Smith's designs take him.

I'm hoping to satisfy a personal curiosity, and the answer will benefit a story I'm writing. How might nuns--or, in this case, religious sisters--handle the issue of names in 1964? I understand (sort of) that after Vatican II, many nuns went back to using their baptismal names rather than their saints names or religious names. However, the story takes place before the closing of the Second Vatican Council.

I've been doing research. I've learned about the difference between solemn and simple vows, between nuns and religious sisters. (The Sisters of Charity take the latter and are the latter.) However, I'm still stumped on the matter of names. I've been researching Catholic nuns in general and the Sisters of Charity in specific, and the Sisters of Charity website has helped me establish a pattern among names of current members but hasn't answered my questions.

My questions are about characters from Doubt, if you hadn't already figured that out:

--in the case of Sister Aloysius Beauvier, is Beauvier likely to be a "secular" last name, such as her husband's last name?

--would her family members (whom I am inventing, and who are Roman Catholic but not particularly religious) refer to her by her baptismal first name, which is certainly not Aloysius?

--would the Sisters of Charity likely speak on the topic of their own names in relation to news from Vatican II in the year 1964?

--is any information given in the film about James or Aloysius' baptismal names and/or family names from before they entered the order? I seem to remember lines of text on the screen at the end of the film indicating that the sister on whom Sister James was based went by a different name later in life. (I realize this last question smacks of laziness on my part--I should just watch the movie again. I've seen it three times and have read the script of the play, but I'm having an odd memory lapse when it comes to these characters' family names. Part of the problem is that several different stories I've read use the same baptismal names for these characters, and I'm having trouble distinguishing canon from fanon. I do plan on watching the film again soon. Real soon, considering I'm starting to find myself in a bit of a time crunch.)

I could give my dad a call, as he'd probably know the answers to the first three questions, if not all four. However, there are two important things I want to avoid when it comes to my relationship with my dad:

1) lying to him
2) telling him that I femslash nuns as a hobby

So, hello internet. Any help (firm facts, speculation, additional questions) is greatly appreciated.

Until noon EST on January 20, you can bid on stories, artwork, and other offerings. The highest bidder in each auction will be notified, and will be responsible for donating the amount they bid to one of these relief organizations.

You can find my auction here. I am offering a femslash fic (minimum of 1000 words. Potential fandoms: "Battlestar Galactica" [2003 TV series], The Devil Wears Prada [film], or Doubt [film]) at a starting bid of $5.

Please consider bidding--for a story of mine or for one of the near-countless other offerings! And regardless of whether or not you win, please consider donating something to help with the long, painful recovery process that Haiti currently faces. If you're interested in donating money but would prefer not to participate in the [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti auction, Partners in Health is a great place to start.
